According to research firm NPD Group, Apple has passed up Samsung and LG to become the #1 selling US handset brand in the fourth quarter of 2011. Between the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, the iPhone accounted for 43% of the US smartphone market, even though Android’s market share increased to 48%.

Combined, iOS and Android devices accounted for over 90% of US sales, leaving Blackberry, Windows Phone and other mobile OSs under 10%.

The NPD went on to say that 57% of first time US smartphone buyers go with an Android device, while only 34% of first time buyers purchased iPhones…(...)

Apple has received some slack of late over the perceived conditions of the Chinese workers who build its hugely popular products. With the eyes of the world currently firmly fixed on the likes of Foxconn, people are beginning to look more closely at the real cost of building our iPhones and iPads.

An online petition, set up to urge Apple to protect its Chinese workers has received 162,000 signatures in just over a week, with the number continuing to grow.

Allegations of unsafe working conditions and long hours have been rife of late, with Apple’s main manufacturing partner, Foxconn, at the center of the issue…(...)

Apple heavily relies on Foxconn for producing its hugely popular iPhones and iPads, and the more business booms for Apple, the better Foxconn does, too.

Foxconn’s huge production facilities are apparently not quite huge enough, and now the company is looking at building a further five facilities in Brazil, with the aim of helping it to keep up with demand for Apple devices.

Apple may have struck a blow in its current battle with Samsung over wireless technology patents, without actually doing anything.

News broke today that the European Union is launching a formal investigation into Samsung and its potential breach of EU antitrust rules. The investigation itself will focus on FRAND patents which means patent appliciations related to standards must be “fair, reasonable, and on non-discriminatory terms.”

The EU obviously believes Samsung hasn’t been acting entirely above board with regards to its current patent dealings with Apple…(...)

It seems right now that Apple just can do no wrong. With record sales of its devices and huge amounts of money sat in the bank, it’s all very rosy over in Cupertino. But other companies have had successful periods before, only for things to go a little awry in future years.

Despite great results from Apple ever since Steve Jobs returned to the company back in 1997, it wasn’t really until the iPhone’s introduction in 2007 that the world really took notice of what was going in at 1 Infinite Loop.

Now it’s a worldwide phenomenon, with people owning iPhones who would never have contemplated picking up a Mac.

Throw in the beginnings of a tablet market that is still being dominated by the iPad, and Apple have every right to feel smug. But it may not last forever…(...)

Apple today announced the hiring of a new Senior Vice President of Retail, with John Browett getting the top job.

Browett, a the former head of Dixons in the UK, takes over from Ron Johnson who left to take up a role at JC Penney last November.

The new hire will start in his new position in April, with Apple CEO Tim Cook seemingly pleased with the new recruit, despite Dixons’ poor performance on the UK high street over the last few years…(...)

Apple is still coming to terms with the loss of its charismatic co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, and probably will be for some time. While there is no doubting new CEO Tim Cook’s abilities to run a tight ship, he’ll possibly be the first to admit that there will only ever be one Steve Jobs.

The company remembers Jobs throughout the halls of its 1 Infinite Loop campus, with photos of the man who saved Apple back in the 90s placed on the walls of Apple’s HQ. Quotes are also seen attached to corridor walls, with some of Jobs’ famous pearls of wisdom there to help motivate the Apple team even from beyond the grave.

Now 9to5 Mac has been given photographs of some of the photos and quotes that can be found inside Apple’s offices, with at least one of them taking employees back to the days of the original Macintosh…(...)

Bill Gates has told how he sent Steve Jobs a personal letter before his death, and explained how the pair’s complicated relationship worked.

During an interview with The Telegraph, the former Microsoft CEO spoke about Jobs and the relationship between the two during the Macintosh days and how the two became competitors after initially working on the same project.

Bill Gates also went on to describe Jobs as an “incredible genius“ and spoke about the Apple CEO’s work in increasing the Mac’s market share in the face of competition from Microsoft’s PC platform…(...)

Apple may appear to be the biggest tablet vendor on the planet with the company selling iPads hand over fist, but it seems that end-users are not the only ones taking a shine to the tablet.

According to new figures from enterprise mobile services vendor Good Technology, the iPad made up 96% of the tablets activated at the 2,000 companies that use its services.
